1. What has he/she been up to since the last entry? Or, if this is the first entry, provide an introduction, setting the scene for your character. Where is he/she? Why has he/she begun this journal?
2. What does he/she think about the situation he/she is currently in?
3. What are his/her feelings towards those around him/her?
4. Who has he/she met?
5. What does he/she think might happen next and how does he/she feel about it?
6. If your character has been absent for the majority or all of the "chapter", then what has he/she been up to during this absence in the novel?
7. Has he/she accomplished anything that they are particularly proud or ashamed of? If not, what are their feelings about the actions they have taken so far?
Remember that you are writing as the character, so be sure that you continue to write in the first person and remember not to allow your own bias affect the entry. I want to know what your character is thinking! We can discuss your personal thoughts on the plot in the comments!
Each entry MUST be at least 3 paragraphs long. Good, full paragraphs. While I am not necessarily grading based on length, it might be necessary to write a good deal more than 3 paragraphs to answer all of the above prompts in 1 or more of your entries. This is a creative writing assignment and I invite you to get as inventive as you can. You should be thinking of this as a real diary and you should do your best to try and capture the personality of your selected character in each entry. If you select Samuel Vimes as your character, keep in mind his cynical and suspicious nature. If you select Carrot, remember that he is charismatic and kind. Carrot is unlikely to think poorly about anyone and will try and look on the bright side. Vimes, meanwhile, might be looking for the ulterior motive of the other characters or longing for that next drink. While writing each entry, you should also keep in mind that your character can only discuss what he/she knows is going on.
This is a school assignment, so keep it appropriate for the classroom.
I will be checking your entries at the end of every week, and will leave a comment for you. Please feel free to respond to them as I will keep track of your responses and may reply to your comment in turn. Do not hesitate to leave a comment on your own entry with any thoughts or questions you may have regarding the novel or the assignment.
